Remember the old saying, “you never get a second chance to create a first impression.” It really applies to real estate and the curb appeal of your home when selling.
When a buyer drives up to see your home, the curb appeal – how your home “presents itself” from the outside – sets the stage for buyers and how they view your home. A well-kept, impressive property (from the outside) is vitally-important to impress buyers when they first see your home. In fact, I’ve had buyers tell me to “keep driving” and not stop because of what they saw when we approached a home to go see. I’ve had it happen multiple times – curb appeal is so important.
While there are many, here are 7 key steps for creating great curb appeal:
- Mow the lawn, trim the bushes and hedges, and clean up the leaves. Hiring a gardener during the time your home is for sale can be a great investment. Tell the gardener you want your landscaping to look well-manicured and clean during your selling period.
- Remove the garbage cans from the front yard.
- Wash the windows. Some say removing the screens makes the windows show and shine more impressively.
- Keep the cars out of the driveway and away from the front of the house.
- Replace or paint the front door. If the garage door looks bad, paint it or replace it.
- Plant colorful flowers along the front walkway and put some potted flowers outside the front door.
- If the house needs it, then paint the exterior. A few thousand dollars invested in exterior painting can more than pay for itself when selling.
